Papa Hawaiki is a $14.8m sports hub at Lindvart Park, owned and run by local charity Kaikohe and Districts Sportsville.

The complex offers many indoor sports including Pickleball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball, Netball, and Turbo Touch.

Far North mayor Moko Tepania says that the benefits are more than just physical. "The battle for money, the battle for support by the community, the council and the government. This complex is the culmination of those dreams. This is a catalyst for the community, highlighting the importance of all aspects of healthy living."

The Board of Kaikohe and Districts Sportsville says that Papa Hawaiki allows Kaikohe to develop its local talent without them having to leave town.

John Julius Lindvart was a prominent farmer and landowner in the Kaikohe area, who, at his death in 1930, bequeathed $2,000 for the purchase and upkeep of a public recreation ground for the inhabitants of Kaikohe.

Problems with the estate meant that the Public Trustee was not able to pay out the total amount of Lindvart’s reserve land bequest until two decades after his demise, in the 1950s.

Much of the reserve land comprising Lindvart Park was purchased in the early 1930s by the then Kaikohe Town Board as Kaikohe Recreation Ground.

Amendments to the terms of Lindvart’s will in the 1950s enabled his original bequest to be used for the upkeep of the reserve.

The name was officially changed to Lindvart Memorial Park in 1951. An additional seven hectares, locally known as Rugby Park, was acquired in the late 1960s.

Lindvart Park is a district park as it serves a wider community than solely Kaikohe, with many people travelling to Kaikohe from outlying areas to access sport and recreation facilities within the park.

Kaikohe and Districts Sportsville Incorporated values Sport for Life.

We encourage people in Kaikohe and surrounding areas to play sport and we support all those who volunteer their time and expertise to provide opportunities for others to participate in sport.

Kaikohe and Districts Sportsville liaises with sporting organisations, professionals and governing bodies to ensure that we keep up to date with opportunities, regulations and useful information.

We actively work, and seek funding, to improve local sports facilities and sports provision.

Kaikohe and Districts Sportsville manage the sporting facilities at Lindvart Park, Kaikohe, on behalf of the Far North District Council. These facilities include regulation courts, several playing fields (both natural and synthetic), lights for night games and a well-equipped Pavilion building. We welcome bookings from new and existing users.
